Please note that for some inexplicable reason, following my last update to this page all previous links from the index to individual tunes have been rendered invalid. Please bear with me for the next few weeks while I rebuild the index.

Last updated : 27 February 2023. For a timeline of additions and revisions to the tunes in this page, see https://theirishmandolin.com/index-by-date/ Currently re-recording some of the earliest sound files, whose quality was below par or which were played through only once. From 10 June 2022 onwards I’ll no longer be routinely including links to the relevant tune at http://thesession.org (sorry, Jeremy!). Finding and copying the relevant link takes time which I can ill-afford.

In the fullness of time, the tunes in this collection are replicated on my YouTube channel – https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVvlBAsMSlHMfjET8I2fQJg/

The Irish Mandolin Tunebook Volume 6 (December 2022) is now available to buy in e-book format by clicking this link. Volume 1 (March 2021), Volume 2 (May 2021), Volumes 3 &4 (January 2022) and Volume 5 (April 2022) also available. Every sale helps with the costs of maintaining this site.

Old Lurgan Town Jig (6/8), D Major. This jig was written by Marinie Toman from the eponymous Lurgan in County Armagh. It was written while he was living in Donegal and feeling homesick for his old stomping ground, to which he’s now returned. Marinie has been someone whose name I’ve known for many years – although our paths haven’t crossed often as far as I can remember. He used to play in a band with my sister, way back in the mists of time. And he was a close friend and musical sparring partner of my uncle, Patsy Crossey. I was delighted when, a few days ago, he subscribed to my YouTube channel and I found that he, too, has a YouTube channel (see https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvF4pWfPAzVjYmUH6ABejHA )which features a number of videos of his fine banjo playing. One tune in particular caught my eye and ear – this jig, Old Lurgan Town. So I got in touch to ask if he had any information about the jig because tunes referencing Lurgan – the town nearest to Derrymacash where I grew up – always intrigue me. Hence I discovered that this is one of Marinie’s own compositions. I asked Marinie for permission to record it. He very kindly gave me free rein! I found some of Marinie’s notation a little difficult to play and so I took the liberty of adapting it to suit my playing style (which is a tad more basic than Marinie’s). Hence I have included two versions of tablature and sheet music, as I play the tune in the recording which follows and as Marinie originally set the tune out. Many thanks, Marinie, for allowing me to pass this tune on to others. Much appreciated. Mandolin tab of the version as recorded by Aidan Crossey. Paddy Fahey’s Number 1 Reel (4/4), D Dorian. Paddy Fahey, a fiddler from East Galway who recently passed away (May 2019) at the grand old age of 103, is widely regarded (alongside luminaries such as Ed Reavy, Sean Ryan, Vincent Broderick) as one of the finest composers of tunes in the range of Irish traditional music formats. In addition to his industry, Fahey is renowned for never having given a name to any of his tunes and hence they are referred to by number (or simply as “one of Paddy Fahey’s”). Josephine Keegan includes a number of Fahey’s tunes in her book “A Drop In The Ocean” and – controversially! – she assigns titles to them (e.g. The London Fahey, Fahey’s Flight). A confession of sorts. I have struggled with Paddy Fahey’s tunes. Many are in keys which I find it hard to get my head around… A contact got in touch recently and virtually ordered me to get over myself and learn a few Fahey tunes. OK – as they say in The Sound Of Music, let’s start at the very beginning! Further info here. Mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing Paddy Fahey’s Number 1 on my G&O #34 mandolin.

Paddy Fahey’s Number 14 Reel (4/4), G Major. Continuing my excursion into Fahey’s tunes, I found this reel to be particularly attractive. A slight technical note. Somehow when playing the 4th bar of the second part, I find it easiest to come out of first position and play the “f” on the 9th fret of the A string… Your mileage may vary and so you may choose to stick with the standard first position fingering shown in the tab. Further info here. Mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing Paddy Fahey’s Number 14 on my G&O #34 mandolin.

Paddy From Cork Jig (6/8), D Major. Mandolin tab here.  Listen to me playing Paddy From Cork on my Revelation Jaguar electric mandolin.

Paddy From Portlaw Jig (6/8), D Major. Some tunes were drawn to simply because of the quality of the tune itself. The rhythm, the melody, the emotions it stirs. Others because the name creates a connection. It was because of the latter that I hunted down Paddy From Portlaw. My partner’s late grandfather originally came from Portlaw (although he wasn’t called Paddy) and this tune connects us over time and space… Further info here. Mandolin tab here. Paddy Kelly’s Reel (4/4), G Major. A reel which I first heard on an album by The Mulcahy Family and which then became a regular at a session I used to show up at. Over the years my playing of the tune has changed and the tablature represents the way I now approach the tune (March 2022). I’m sure I’ll change my approach to it further over time… Further info here. Mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing Paddy Kelly’s on my Revelation Jaguar electric mandolin.

Patsy Tuohey’s Reel (4/4), E Dorian. Patsy Tuohey (1865-1923) is regarded by many as *the* uilleann piper of all time. Poor But Happy At 53 Reel (4/4), E Minor. I came across this reel only very recently. It was posted to thesession.org by Zina Lee, a fine fiddler, who I got to know during the time a few years back when she lived in London. This reel has totally captivated me. My setting is a little different to the way in which Zina originally set it out. But that’s often the way with traditional tunes. As we become familiar with them, we personalise them… According to ceolachan at the session, the tune was composed by Paddy Bawn O’Brien and he had in mind that the tune would be played quite slowly (which is how I tend to take it). Further info here. Mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing the tune on my G&O #34 mandolin here. Listen to me playing the tune on my Ashbury AT-40 tenor guitar here. 5 September 2021. A curiosity. The Pride Of Petravore Hornpipe / Barndance / March (4/4), E Minor. I’ve heard this tune (the air to Percy French’s “Eileen Og”) played in sets as a hornpipe, a barndance or march. I tend to play it with a march-like rhythm. The song was a great favourite of my late friend, Joe Crilly. Version 1 is a “bare bones” version as set out by Jeremy Keith on thesession.org (see further info link below; the first – X:1 – version of the tune). Version 2 is a version as I like to play it, which owes more than a passing nod to the strange (and wonderful) arrangement by Lankum. Further info here. It’s often played in either G Major or D Major and so I have set out notation and tablature for each of these. Further info here. Mandolin tab for the G Major setting here. Seán Buí Jig (6/8), D Major. The title literally translates as “Yellow John” and indeed this jig is sometimes referred to exactly as that anglicised term. Seán Sa Cheo Reel (4/4), A Mixolydian. The literal translation into English is John In The Fog. Sí Beag, Sí Mór Air (3/4), D Major. Attributed to the legendary harper, Turlough O’Carolan, and generally regarded as one of his compositions . However there is some debate about the tunes authorship and it is suggested that O’Carolan may have simply “repurposed” an earlier traditional tune. Whatever. It was all a very long time ago. The tune remains one of the most popular airs in the Irish tradition, much loved by newcomers to the music and “old hands” alike. Mandolin tab here.  Listen to me playing Sí Beag, Sí Mór on my Revelation Jaguar electric mandolin.

The Siege Of Ennis Polka (2/4), G Major. I think this might be better described as a set dance in 2/4 time rather than a polka as I seem to remember there is a dance which is commonly associated with the tune. Sometimes played with a third part which doesn’t occur at sessions which I’ve attended and where I picked up the tune, so I’ve stuck with the 2 part version with which I am most familiar. The Sligo Maid Reel (4/4), A Dorian (i.e. one sharp). Further info here. Mandolin tab here. Listen… Postscript 2 January 2021. I came across an early recording of Seamus Ennis playing The Sligo Maid alongside The Bucks Of Oranmore. He called the tune “The Sligo Maid’s Lament” and it got me to thinking about how these modal minor tunes can sound plaintive if played at a speed much slower than the usual session speed. So I made a recording of the tune played slowly to demonstrate. You can listen to the slower version here.

Soggy’s Slip Jig (9/8), A Major. This slip jig appears courtesy of an email exchange with Mike Buesseler – a fervent mandolinist and long-time contributor to The Mandolin Cafe. Mike recently made a recording of Soggy’s – a slip jig written by Sean Óg Graham, accordion player with Beoga – and in an email conversation suggested that I might like to record the tune and make it available to followers of this site in tablature format. Although I have been pursuing a policy for some time now of playing each of the tunes at this site twice-through at a minimum, I play this tune through just once. For the simple reason that I find it really quite difficult to play and it was as much as I could manage to get a clean take with no repeat. Your mileage may vary and you may find it easier than I do (and I hope you do because it’s a grand tune!). Further info here. Mandolin tab here. The South Wind Air (3/4), G Major. This tune is a great favourite of a whistle-playing friend. I tend to sit this one out when he plays it in a session. Two reasons. Firstly I prefer to hear people play airs solo and it can be quite the car-crash when people attempt to pile in. Secondly it’s better-suited to a legato instrument like whistle than a staccato instrument such as the mandolin – or banjo, which I also tend to play in sessions. I’ve used lots of reverb and echo in this recording which goes some way towards “filling in the gaps” without having to resort to that horrible effect of (shudder!) tremolo which ought to be reserved for Italian music for which it was developed. Mandolin tab here.  Listen to me playing The South Wind on my Revelation Jaguar electric mandolin.

The Stage Hornpipe (4/4), G Major. Without a doubt the tune I have found most difficult to learn. It took me a very long while to “internalise” the second part – it simply didn’t seem to make musical sense. And then one day, the penny dropped and the notes became a tune. Further info here. Mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing The Stage on my G&O #34 mandolin. Listen to me playing The Stage on my Kentucky KM1000 mandolin.

The Stage Stop Slip Jig (9/8), B Minor. This slip jig was written by Colin Farrell as part of his “tune a day” project. I’m not usually a fan of syncopation – probably because my musicality isn’t always good enough to syncopate tunes well enough that they don’t jar! However in this case, I was happy to stick with it as this is such a lovely tune and such good fun to play… Further info here. Mandolin tab here. Stoneybatter Slip Jig (9/8), EMin. I was first drawn to this tune which is noted in Breandan Breathnach’s Ceol Rince na h-Eireann Volume 1 by the name (my partner has family connections with Stoneybatter, an area of Dublin just north of the river and to the west of the city centre). And then the tune itself grabbed me. However, I found it very confusing to learn for quite some time. It’s been alleged that Tommy Potts based his slip jig, The Butterfly on Stoneybatter and the family resemblance remains strong to the extent that when I was learning Stomeybatter my fingers gravitated towards the patterns in The Butterfly. It took a great deal of practice to drill the new melody into my head and into my fingers! No reference at thesession.org Mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing Stoneybatter on my Paris Swing Macaferri mandolin. Listen to me playing Stoneybatter on my Ashbury AT-40 tenor guitar.

Sunday In Flatbush Hornpipe (4/4), A Major. Composed by Eddie Dooley. A very lovely hornpipe. I struggle a little bit with the tune as it was originally composed and so I have tabbed out a slightly more mandolin-friendly version of the tune as I play it. However if you’re more dextrous than me, you might want to learn the original. The original version of the tune is tabbed out here. My simplified version of the mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing Sunday in Flatbush on my Belmuse EM-190 electric mandolin.

The Sunset Clouds Polka (2/4), D Major. Bill Black – http://capeirish.com – has published a collection of manuscript tune files found in Eddie Dooley’s house after his death. This is one of the tunes in that collection, which Bill attributes to Paddy Curry. Mandolin tab here.  Listen to me playing The Sunset Clouds on my Belmuse EM-190 electric mandolin.

The Sunshine Hornpipe Hornpipe (4/4), G Major. More often played in A Major. A flute-playing friend of mine plays this tune in G and suggested that I learn it in G to be able to play along with him. It was good tip. I struggle to play this is in A – it’s a lot easier to play in G! Mandolin tab here.  Listen to me playing The Sunshine Hornpipe on my Revelation Jaguar electric mandolin.

Listen to me playing The Swallow’s Tail on my G&O #34 mandolin. 29 September 2022.  I was in a session two nights ago and one of my session colleagues started this tune. It had been such a long time since I played that I was completely lost. So I resolved to re-learn it and – while I was at it – to re-record the tune for this collection. New version.  Listen to me playing The Swallow’s Tail on my Revelation Jaguar electric mandolin.

Sweeney’s Buttermilk Reel (4/4), B Minor. A few weeks ago one of the regular visitors to this site, and an occasional email correspondent, asked if I could tab out this reel, written by Brendan McGlinchey and maybe make a sound file to help his practice. One of his friends plays the reel and he was smitten by it. His friend had typed out the tune in abc – which he attached to the email; he doesn’t read abc (or sheet music), just tab. I had to confess at the time that although I knew of the tune, it wasn’t in my repertoire and that if memory served me right I had “given it a go” on several occasions but couldn’t quite get to grips with it. (It’s quite the difficult tune, in my opinion.) After several “pretty please” email rallies, I decided to give it another lash. I sent him the tab, based pretty much on the abc typed out by his mate, and the sound file by email. A few weeks later came the email with the good news that after solid practice to the exclusion of all other playing, he’d cracked it. And he looks forward to surprising his friend when next they get together by joining him in the tune. Further info here. Mandolin tab here. Listen…

Sweeney’s Polka Polka (2/4), A Major. I came across some scribbled ABC for this tune ion an old notebook. I haven’t been able to track down a polka on “thesession” called Sweeney’s with this setting and have no memory of where the ABC came from. It happens some times! Mandolin tab here. Listen…
