Please note that for some inexplicable reason, following my last update to this page on 21 February all previous links from the index to individual tunes have been corrupted. I have now rebuilt the index for all those those tunes indexed under the letters “G”, “H, “I” “J”, “K” and “L” and “M” tunes beginning “Ma” through to Me”.
Last updated : 24 March 2023. For a timeline of additions and revisions to the tunes in this page, see https://theirishmandolin.com/index-by-date/ Currently re-recording some of the earliest sound files, whose quality was below par or which were played through only once. From 10 June 2022 onwards I’ll no longer be routinely including links to the relevant tune at http://thesession.org (sorry, Jeremy!). Finding and copying the relevant link takes time which I can ill-afford.
In the fullness of time, the tunes in this collection are replicated on my YouTube channel – https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVvlBAsMSlHMfjET8I2fQJg/
The Irish Mandolin Tunebook Volume 6 ( December 2022) is now available to buy in e-book format by clicking this link. Volume 1 (March 2021), Volume 2 (May 2021), Volumes 3 &4 (January 2022) and Volume 5 (April 2022) are also available. Every sale helps with the costs of maintaining this site.

A note on Gan Ainm tunes which follow. Gan Ainm literally means “without a name”. There are a huge number of Irish tunes which have a gan aim title. This doesn’t mean that the tune doesn’t have a name, or didn’t have a name. Sometimes the player from whom the tune was collected simply didn’t know/couldn’t recall the name. Or the person/group recording the tune didn’t know the name. And over the years, any connection back to contemporaries who might have known the name of the tune is lost and the tune is destined to exist without a handle for all eternity. Or so it would seem… But from time to time the name of a tune resurfaces – someone finds an old manuscript with a title given to the tune or someone finds a recording with a gan aim tune and pipes up at a place like thesession.org to say that he/she knows the tune by a title of “x”. Occasionally someone will come across a gan aim tune and give it an arbitrary title of their own making – and sometimes this arbitrary “made up” title will persist. The biggest challenge for me with gan aim tunes is recording them in a collection which is ordered alphabetically. Therefore when I publish any gan ainm tunes here, I’ll number them so as to keep them separate in the underlying database. The number is meaningless other than for the purposes of ensuring that any links relate correctly to the relevant gan aim tune.

Gerri’s Favorite Jig (6/8), E Dorian. One of the earliest supporters of my website who has turned out to be a fine friend and who made my acoustic mandolin – the G&O #34 – is Michael Gregory of North Dakota. Michael wrote this fine jig as a tribute to the eponymous Gerri, his wife of many happy years. Michael’s original mandolin tab here. My later revised mandolin tab (with “dots”) here. Listen to me playing Gerri’s Favorite on my Belmuse EM-190 electric mandolin.
Get Up Old Woman And Shake Yourself Slide (12/8), G Major. Featuring Michael Gregory. One of the earliest supporters of my website who has turned out to be a fine friend and who made my acoustic mandolin – the G&O #34 – is Michael Gregory of North Dakota. Michael is an aficionado of polkas and slides, the musical forms most closely associated with the Sliabh Luachra area. Yesterday – 13 March 2023 – he sent me through ABC for three slides which he has been playing a lot in recent weeks. Alongside the ABCs he sent a recording of his playing of the first of those slides, “Get Up Old Woman And Shake Yourself”. Michael’s version of the tune is played on his stunning Girouard Concert Oval Hole mandolin. I have recorded a version myself – on my usual Belmuse mandolin. Michael has been troubled for some time with some health issues which have made it painful for him to play the mandolin. He has had treatment which seems to have made a significant improvement and I look forward to being able to share more of his playing in due course. Mandolin tab here. The Goat’s Polka Polka (2/4), B Minor. This is an unusual tune in that in the “standard” version, each part ends on a repeated F sharp. When I first heard the tune, that ending jarred with me. And so I played a “Version 2” setting in which both parts resolved to a repeated B and which I thought sounded much more pleasing. However as time has gone by, I am now beginning to “get” the standard setting. To allow you to make your own comparisons and draw your own conclusions, I include both versions here. The Green Cockade Hornpipe (4/4), G Major. There are a number of tunes, in different meters, in Irish music called or nicknamed The Green Cockade. This one is a tune which – to my ear – seems to sit right on the cusp of a hornpipe and march. I’ve called it a hornpipe and hopefully my playing emphasises its “hornpipe-ness”. However if the notes are accented just a little differently the tune would have a greater feel of a march about it. Mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing The Green Cockade on my G&O #34 mandolin. The Green Fields Of America Reel (4/4), G Major. I first came across this reel from the piping of the renowned Willie Clancy. It’s one of those reels which – in my humble opinion – takes on a very different character when played slowly and so I have recorded a (more or less) session speed version and a deliberately more slow, more melancholy version. Further info here. Mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing The Green Fields Of America at session speed on my Paris Swing Macaferri mandolin. The Guns Of The Magnificent Seven Reel (4/4), A Dorian. Written by Fintan McManus and one of those few recently-written tunes which became a standard seemingly overnight. The tune has a notable quirk in that the first bar of the third part is 3/4 rather than 4/4 and, in my experience, it takes a little bit of practice for that unusual moment to establish itself in your playing. Mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing The Guns Of The Magnificent Seven on my Revelation Jaguar electric mandolin.
The Gypsy Princess Barndance (4/4), G Major. I avoided this tune for many years. Like, for example, Lucy Farr’s Barndance it seemed “on paper” and “in theory” to be too simple to be of great interest. However my views have changed over the years and I find there’s often way more satisfaction to be derived from playing simple tunes reasonably well than from playing “clever” ones kind of badly… Further info here. The Hag At The Churn Jig (6/8), D Mixolydian (i.e. one sharp). Unusual among jigs in that it’s effectively a 16-bar tune as opposed to the standard 32-bar pattern. Further info here. The Hag With The Money Jig (6/8), D Major? I have added a question mark to the key because, hmmm, I haven’t got enough musical theory to work out exactly what mode this is in. Some people play some of the “c”s in the first part as natural. I prefer to use the sharp c throughout. Further info here. Mandolin tab here. The Hangman’s Rope Hornpipe (4/4), G Major. Composed by Frank McCollum. I play this tune through just once, with no repeat. On the day I set out to record the sound file, I couldn’t get fingers and brain and ear to work together sufficiently well to make a decent recording with a repeat. I’ll come back to this but in the meantime I wanted to make sure that this lovely hornpipe got a well-deserved place in this collection. Mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing The Hangman’s Rope on my Belmuse EM-190 electric mandolin. 27 January 2023. I’ve now revisited this tune, as promised. The Harvest Home Hornpipe (4/4), D Major. If ever a hornpipe deserved the term “ubiquitous”, then it’s this one. I’ve never quite understood why. It’s a tricky tune to play well and to my mind there are much more straightforward (and frankly more melodious) hornpipes which beginners ought to attempt before tackling a tune of this nature. But its very ubiquity attracts beginning players. I suppose that when we’re at the point where it’s difficult to distinguish one tune from another, the very distinctive structure of The Harvest Home stands out in a session and the fact that it often recurs from one session to another may lead the burgeoning sessioneer to consider it a “must-learn” tune… Having said all that I was pleasantly surprised to find that when playing this on my Ashbury AT-40 tenor guitar, at quite a relaxed pace, I was able to find a degree of soulfulness that I’ve rarely been able to extract from the tune in a session setting. Further info here. Mandolin tab here. Listen to me play The Harvest Home on my Ashbury AT-40 tenor guitar… 30 September 2022. New version. Hector The Hero Lament (3/4), D Major. Written by Scott Skinner, a composer of many Scottish tunes. Please take the tab as a guide only. This has proved very difficult for me to transcribe; I can usually tab out dance tunes in minutes but some of the phrasing in this tune left me scratching my head. Funny how we can pick a tune up by ear sometimes and yet have real problems in translating it on to the page! Further info here. Mandolin tab here. Hennessy’s Hornpipe Hornpipe (4/4), G Major. I decided to learn this hornpipe recently as a tribute to Mel Corry, formerly of Lurgan, who sadly passed away from COVID in January 2021. The Holly Bush Reel (4/4), D Mixolydian, i.e. 1 sharp. This reel, written by the late Finbarr Dwyer, has become a standard in Irish music circles. This arrangement is somewhat unusual – for which I take full blame! There are a number of phrases (bar 3 and bar 7 of the first part and bar 7 of the second part) where mandolin players and banjo players would normally play triplets. I’ve played the tune in such a way as to avoid these by substituting phrases which don’t normally appear in written versions of the tune that I’ve seen. Further info here. Mandolin tab here. The Humours Of Bandon Set dance (6/8), G Major. Some people might raise an eyebrow when I call this a set dance. Surely it’s a jig? Well it’s in jig time… But jigs are generally in the form of eight bars repeated plus eight bars repeated (and so on if the jigs are longer than two parts). The Humours Of Bandon is generally played as eight bars repeated plus sixteen bars repeated and long-form/unusual-form tunes such as this are called set dances (which can be in any meter). That said, I have heard The Humours Of Bandon played as eight bars repeated plus sixteen bars with no repeat and therefore such a version is a true jig. And of course if there’s no dancing involved then the set dance version can slot into a set of jigs with no bother. Mandolin tab here. The Humours Of Castlefin I defy anyone who has ever listened to the “Live At Knocknagree” album by Noel Hill and the late Tony MacMahon to be unmoved by their version of this cracking reel. However, much though I love the tune, for years it has defeated me. After much – MUCH! – practice, I still find that I can’t play it with as much flow as I’d like. Sigh! Further info here. The Humours Of Glynn Jig (6/8), D Major. I was prompted to include this tune – which has been languishing in my ever-growing “to do” list for a long time – after hearing a version played by Belfast mandolinist, Lawrence Molloy. After recording The Humours Of Glynn in D Major (see above), I decided to a little bit of research and found myself disappearing down a rabbit hole in which I came across this other jig, in G Major, also called The Humours Of Glynn. If There Weren’t Any Women In The World Barndance (4/4), G Major. A little while back I wrote a hornpipe (The Cocky Hornpipe) which also, in my opinion, lent itself to playing as a 4/4 march. See my original tunes page for details. A few days ago (ie in mid-April 2021) a visitor to this site emailed me to say that the first part of The Cocky Hornpipe was very similar to a barndance called “If There Weren’t Any Women In The World”. I wasn’t very familiar with the tune so I ran an internet search to check and – aargh – he was absolutely right. I’m prepared to let the “Cocky” tune stand because the second part is quite different but as a form of penance I quickly tabbed out this tune and made a recording. My internet search pulled up lots of versions of the tune and the tabbed version is based very much on the version notated by Ed Reavy in his book “Corktown”. More info here. Mandolin tab here. Ivy House Jig (6/8), G Major. My eye was caught by the title of this Scottish jig – therefore just a little outside my usual narrow interest range – on account of a personal connection. A mile or so from my home in South East London is a pub called The Ivy House which, for a brief spell, hosted a session which I had occasion to visit several times and which was a good night’s crack all round. It was also the venue for my 50th birthday party – a riotous event featuring one of London’s highest-energy trad bands, Hungry Grass. I was thinking as I started to get my head around this tune about the fact that two of my friends from that birthday party are no longer with us and so I learned this tune as a sort of tribute to both of them. Joe and Dean – rest in peace, lads. The tune is not available at thesession.org Mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing Ivy House on my Paris Swing Macaferri mandolin. 6 October 2022. New version. Listen to me playing Ivy House on my Revelation Jaguar electric mandolin.
The Ivy Leaf Reel (4/4), A Mixolydian (i.e. two sharps). I’ve been quite obsessed with this tune since I heard Paddy Keenan play it on one of his albums with outstanding backing on guitar by Arty McGlynn. I have heard it described by a player in a session one evening as the most beautiful reel in Irish music. I’m not a great one for superlatives when it comes to the music (it’s not a competition!) but it’s hard to argue against that statement. Further info here. Mandolin tab here. John Lydon’s Jig (6/8), D Major. There’s a bit of a story behind this one. One of my mandolin allies, a Belfast man called Lawrence Molloy who has been very supportive of my various musical efforts through the years, got in touch a while ago to ask a favour. On one of Lankum member Daragh Lynch’s excellent “Fire Draw Near” podcasts he played a set of tunes by piper Caoimhín Ó Fearghail one of which was called John Lydon’s. Lawrence’s ears pricked up when he heard the name. He and I both had our musical epiphanies in the Northern Ireland punk scene and therefore any tune named after the frontman of The Sex Pistols is always going to pique a little interest. But the name alone didn’t commend the tune to Lawrence; the tune was a cracker and he’d like to learn it. A few searches for abc on the internet were fruitless and Lawrence (like many of us) hasn’t quite developed his ear to the extent that he can pick up a tune by listening. So he got in touch to ask a favour – would I mind having a listen and seeing if I could maybe notate it?
Now … my ear isn’t quite as good as I’d like it to be and I find transcribing piping particularly difficult. It’s often hard to separate out the root note from grace notes. But I said I’d give it a go and later that evening I sent Lawrence some abc for the tune with the caveat that I’d found some of the phrases a tad ambiguous. It seems it was pretty close and Lawrence took himself off to learn the tune.
A few weeks passed and then one morning my YouTube notifications showed that Lawrence had recorded the tune and posted his playing of it on his Nigel Forster gigandolin (seriously, it’s a beast – in a good way!) to YouTube (check out the link in my recommended listening page).
And then – a few days later – up popped another YouTube notification, informing me that Jill McAuley, one of my favourite GDAE players, had recorded the tune on her new tenor guitar (again, see the recommended listening page for the link). I’m still a little nervous that I may have misheard the odd phrase in the Caoimhín Ó Fearghail version so I listened quite intensely to Jill’s playing and was delighted to hear that it lined up pretty closely to the notes I’d transcribed. I asked Jill where she’d got her version from… Turns out it was from my original abc posted by Lawrence to the Mandolin Cafe. And it also turns out that the new tenor guitar was one she’d got via Lawrence as well. Small world!
Anyway … mandolin tab here. Listen to my efforts at playing the tune on my G&O #34 mandolin here (but give Lawrence’s and Jill’s versions a listen, too…) 20 October 2022. New version. Listen to me playing John Lydon’s on my Revelation Jaguar electric mandolin.

The Kerry Jig Reel (4/4), A Dorian. Although this appears on a record by The Bothy Band (and elsewhere) under the confusing title “The Kerry Jig”, it’s actually a reel, traditionally played rather more slowly than the speed at which reels are usually played. It’s also known – less commonly – as Rowsome’s Reel, which at least indicates the correct rhythm. Further info here. Mandolin tab here. The Kesh Jig (6/8), G Major. Possibly the most popular jig in the Irish music repertoire. Although such is the nature of Irish music (and, presumably, traditional music forms throughout the world) that its popularity makes in *unpopular* with many musicians. I am often struck by the fact that while many newcomers to the music rush to learn The Kesh, it’s actually quite a hard jig to play – particularly the closing bars of the second part. Hence I’ve notated and tabbed an alternative version which fits in fine in the session environment but is less challenging for the newcomer to play well. Further info here. Eddie Dooley’s setting is a little beyond me, so I’ve taken the liberty of making a few tweaks which – for me at least, with my meagre talents – makes the tune much easier to play. Mandolin tab for Eddie Dooley’s original setting here. Mandolin tab for my simplified setting here. Listen to me playing The Kilderriheen Reel on my Belmuse EM-190 electric mandolin.
The Kilfenora Lass Jig (6/8), A Dorian (Part 1) and G Major (Part 2). Mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing The Kilfenora Lass on my Belmuse EM-190 electric mandolin.
The Kilfrush Reel (4/4), D Major. I was listening to the compilation “Fire Draw Near” by Ian Lynch from Lankum – an album which ties in with his excellent podcast series of the same name – when Tommy Reck’s pipes version of this tune seized my attention. Truly inspired playing. (The rest of the CD is no mean listen either. Check it out here.) I couldn’t hope to approach the quality of Tommy Reck’s playing and so I play it in a style which suits me. Note that I play the reel, as Tommy Reck does, “doubled” (i.e. each part repeats) but some players play this reel “single” (i.e. each part is played only once). Further info here. Mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing The Kilfrush on my Paris Swing “Macaferri” mandolin. 10 February 2022. Additional sound file. I recently came across another name for this tune – Kiss The Bride In Bed – and I decided to create a new sound file. I’ve been experimenting with plectrums in the last few days. This new sound file was recorded using “The Dawg” – a mandolin plectrum designed and named after David Grisman which is much heavier than the sorts of plectrum which I normally use. Listen to me playing The Kilfrush/Kiss The Bride In Bed on my Paris Swing Macaferri mandolin. 23 October 2022. New version. Listen to me playing The Kilfrush on my Revelation Jaguar electric mandolin.

Improved sound file added. Listen to me playing The Killarney Boys Of Pleasure on my G&O #34 mandolin. 12 December 2021. Additional sound file. Played more slowly than in July 2021. Listen to me playing The Killarney Boys Of Pleasure on my Revelation Jaguar electric mandolin.
The Killavil Jig Jig (6/8), E Dorian (i.e. two sharps – although there is no “c” in the tune, so the mode is a little academic). Further info here. Mandolin tab here. Listen… 25 February 2022. Additional sound file. Listen to me playing The Killavil Jig on my Revelation Jaguar electric mandolin.

The Kilnamona Barndance Barndance (4/4), D Major. I first came across this barndance played by Martin Hayes in F Major. The standard key for the tune is G Major. However I discovered a setting of the tune in D Major by JACKB, a prolific poster of tunes at The Session. I was very taken with his setting which I play here – more or less! Further info here. Mandolin tab here (revised October 2022). Listen to me playing The Kilnamona Banrdance on my Eastman MD304 mandolin. Listen to alternate version played on my Ashbury octave mandola. (with a few variations from my original version on mandolin). Listen to another alternate version, recorded on my G&O #34 mandolin with variations in the repeat. 27 October 2022. New version. Listen to me playing The Kilnamona Barndance on my Revelation Jaguar electric mandolin.
The King Of The Fairies Set Dance (4/4), E Dorian. A widely-played set dance, popularised by Horslips who gave the tune the full electric treatment. I’ve hesitated posting this tune, primarily because I’ve heard it played in so many different versions that it’s more difficult than usual to settle on a version that’s reasonably “canonical”. So I’ve decided to post the tune in two different settings. The first is the original setting of the tune from the relevant page within “The Session”, as posted there by Jeremy Keith himself. The second setting is the one I tend to play which is based on various encounters with the tune over the years whereby lots of people’s variations and idiosyncrasies have tended to merge into my favoured take on the tune. Further info here. Mandolin tab for version 1 (Jeremy Keith’s version) here. Tab for version 2 (Aidan Crossey’s version) here. Listen to me playing version 1 of The King Of The Fairies on my Falder mandolin. Listen to me playing version 2 of The King Of The Fairies on my Falder mandolin. 4 October 2021 Additional sound file. Listen to me playing The King Of The Fairies on my Revelation Jaguar electric mandolin.
The Kingston Hornpipe Hornpipe (4/4), G Major. I came across this fine hornpipe recently. It has a distinctly Irish feel to it and so suspect that the title doesn’t actually refer to either of the two Kingstons which I know – either in Jamaica or in South West London. I suspect it was named after Kingstown in Ireland. Somewhat academic since the former Kingstown has been renamed – to rid itself of colonial overtones – as Dún Laoghaire. Mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing The Kingston Hornpipe on my Belmuse EM-190 electric mandolin.
The Kinnard Polka Polka (2/4), G Major. Mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing The Kinnard Polka on my Revelation Jaguar electric mandolin.

Kitty’s Fancy Mazurka (3/4), D Major. Very closely related to the better-known mazurka elsewhere in this collection which I learned as Tommy Peoples’ Mazurka. However this tune is sufficiently different to warrant inclusion here in its own right. Mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing Kitty’s Fancy on my G&O #34 mandolin.
Kitty’s Gone A-Milking Reel (4/4), G Major. Further info here. Mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing Kitty’s Gone A-Milking on my Eastman MD304 mandolin. 30 October 2022. New version. Lately I’ve been experiencing a degree of joint trouble in the top joints of some of the fingers on my left hand – possibly a symptom of an underlying blood disorder which has recently been diagnosed and for which I’m receiving treatment. It means that there are certain phrases – those which involve “barring” across two strings – which are a tad painful. And therefore I’ve been playing tunes in settings which avoid the need for such barring and which don’t sound “wrong”. Therefore please find revised mandolin tab for the way in which I’ve played the tune in the recent electric mandolin version here. Listen to me playing Kitty’s Gone A-Milking (new setting) on my Revelation Jaguar electric mandolin.

The Lamplighter’s Hornpipe Hornpipe (4/4), A Major. This tune was commended to me by an American friend who learned it first in a fife band but subsequently plays it on mandolin. Listen to Michael Gregory playing the tune here… Listen to Aidan Crossey playing the tune at “session speed” here. Listen to Aidan Crossey playing the tune at a much slower pace here. (NB this “slow” version isn’t designed to make the tune easier to learn. I’ve recently – i.e. early days of 2021 been thinking a lot about how dance tunes take on a very different, melancholy, tone when played deliberately slowly. I think this juxtaposition of a session speed version alongside a slow and hopefully quite haunting version makes the point better than words ever could. The slow version also (in my opinion) highlights the lovely tone of my G&O #34 mandolin which was hand-built to an incredibly exacting high specification by Michael Gregory in 2018 and very generously gifted to me towards the end of 2020.) 29 September 2021. A new sound file, recorded on my G&O #34 mandolin for the “Song-A-Week Social Group” at The Mandolin Cafe on 28 September 2021. The Limestone Rock Reel (4/4), G Major. Yes – another reel in G with the same name. While it’s not *often* that one comes across two different tunes of the same type in the same key with the same name, neither is it unheard of. The Little Stack Of Wheat Hornpipe (4/4), G Major. There’s some controversy over the title of this tune. Louise’s Polka Polka (2/4), D Major. An original composition, © Bill Black. Bill Black is very well-known in Irish music circles for – among other things! – his advocacy of Irish music, his tireless work in collecting tunes, converting them to ABC format and making them available to players world wide via his incredible website, http://capeirish.com Bill is also no mean talent as a tunesmith and he’s given me permission to share some of his tunes with you. I’m always delighted to come across musicians who have a yearning – and a facility! – for conjuring up tunes in traditional Irish idioms out of the ether. Mandolin tab here. I was listening a few nights ago to the great album “The Stone In The Field” by the piper Tommy Reck. Tommy plays two polkas on the album which my copy lists simply as “Two Polkas”. The second sounded really familiar but I couldn’t quite pin it. A little bit of digging revealed that it’s Tommy’s setting of Maggie In The Wood and so I have included new tab and new recording of Tommy’s version which differs quite a bit from the earlier version at this site which is more or less the standard version played in sessions. (The first polka in the set is Tommy Reck’s Polka; I have included tab and a sound file here.) Mandolin tab for Tommy Reck’s setting here. The Maid At The Spinning Wheel Jig (6/8), G Major. One of the “big” jigs in the Irish musical tradition. Often played with the first three parts only as the fourth part is considered by many players to be very difficult. In my experience – and probably due to limitations in my technical ability – I find the third part more difficult to play than the fourth (and that’s probably very evident in the sound file; I do my best!). However I found the fourth part quite difficult to understand for quite some time, until one day it clicked. A two-part version of the jig is found in “the book” (O’Neill’s 1,001) under the title “The Road To Lurgan“. Lurgan is the nearest town to my birthplace and so I’ve previously tabbed and recorded this jig. Further info here. Mandolin tab in pdf format here (splits over two pages). May I Have This Dance? Waltz (3/4), D Major. This delightful tune is written by a friend of mine, Chris Corbett originally – like myself – from Northern Ireland and – again like myself – now living in South East London. A few years ago Chris brought out an album “Music Out Of Thin Air” which featured his own compositions on flute and whistle in a range of traditional Irish tune styles and with a number of backing musicians of the highest calibre (including his daughter, Dilara, who has subsequently gone on to study music at degree level). I was re-listening to the album towards the end of 2020 and this tune grabbed me in a way it hadn’t previously. Sometimes our ears are more open than others! So I attempted to learn it by ear and simply couldn’t get some of the phrases. I emailed Chris who obliged me with an abc version of the tune from which I’ve derived the mandolin tablature. You’ll see that Chris’ version of the tune has a number of half-notes which I don’t play in my version. I find some of them quite tricky on mandolin and I would prefer not to spoil the flow of the tune by “fumbling” to play the half-notes badly. Needless to say in Chris’ own playing, he articulates these half-notes perfectly and to great effect. If you’re interested in hearing some more of Chris’ compositions and his superb playing, head over to this link and you’ll be able to listen to some complete tracks from the album. Mandolin tab here. Listen to Aidan Crossey playing the tune on mandolin. Listen to Aidan Crossey playing the tune on a 4-string domra. Listen to Chris Corbett himself playing the tune (first tune in a set of two).
Mazurka d’Auvergne Mazurka (3/4), G Major. Like the Mazurka de Lapleau (below), a FRENCH tune which would sit very well among the small stable of Irish mazurkas. Mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing Mazurka d’Auvergne on my Revelation Jaguar electric mandolin.
Mazurka de Lapleau Mazurka (3/4), G Major. This is a FRENCH tune rather than an Irish traditional tune and whereas I usually confine the material in this website to tunes which which you might hear in an Irish session, this is probably unlikely to make an appearance at many such gatherings… However I think it’s a tune which could very easily be adopted (without having to be adapted!) by Irish musicians. I’m far from being the first Irish player to have found this tune. Indeed it has been recorded under the name The Dublin Mazurka. Further info here. Mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing Mazurka de Lapleau on my G&O #34 mandolin. 5 December 2022. New version. Listen to me playing Mazurka de Lapleau on my Belmuse EM-190 electric mandolin.

McIntyre’s Fancy Jig (6/8), A Minor. Listen to me playing McIntyre’s Fancy on my Belmuse EM-190 electric mandolin.
McKeown’s Polka (2/4), D Major. This 4-part polka is a great favourite of a musician who has played for many years in my locality. He’s been urging me to learn it for all of the time that I’ve known him but somehow I didn’t get around to it. It was allegedly introduced into Irish music circles by Peggy Peakin who played around Liverpool. It’s a strange tune which, I understand, is a type of “ballroom polka” and somewhat different in nature to the Sliabh Luachra polkas with which were likely all more familiar. Given the length of the tune, I can’t set it out on one page in my preferred format which combines sheet music and tab. And so I have set out sheet music and tablature separately (and in order to do that, I’ve had to use a slightly different format for the tab…). Mandolin tab here. Sheet music here. Listen to me playing McKeown’s on my Revelation Jaguar electric mandolin (no repeat).
McMahon’s Favourite Jig (6/8), D Major. A jig written by James McMahon (Fermanagh and Belfast) who wrote the very popular reel, The Banshee. No reference at the session.org. Mandolin tab here. Listen to me playing McMahon’s Favourite on my Revelation Jaguar electric mandolin.
McNulty’s Jig (6/8), 2 settings – D Major and G Major. I was inspired to learn this tune after hearing Belfast mandolin player Lawrence Molloy give us his rendition on his YouTube channel. (Check it out here.) On digging around, I found that the tune is commonly played in either G Major or D Major and would appear to have started life as a Newfoundland tune called The Rollicking Skipper. Out of deference to Lawrence, I have included the tune under it’s adopted name of McNulty’s. Further info here. Mandolin tab for the version in G Major here. Mullin’s Favourite Reel (4/4), G Major. I came across this reel a few weeks ago at Henrik Norbeck’s tune collection website and became a little obsessed with it. However I’m not convinced that the title is “correct” (as far as the title of any traditional tune can be said to be “correct”!). There are a number of settings of a reel called Mullin’s Favourite at thesession.org, none of which resemble this tune. (If anyone has an alternative name for this reel, please let me know!) The second part of this reel is, for me at least, quite confusing and I really have to concentrate very hard to make sure that I’m playing it correctly. Mandolin tab here. Mussels In The Corner Polka (2/4), D Major. Well … not technically a polka. This is a Newfoundland “single” but to all intents and purposes, as far as Irish musicians are concerned, it’s a polka. 🙂 And what’s more – it’s very much a D major variation on that popular Irish polka “Maggie In The Wood“.
